CHARLES’S MUSIC

I* present Charles’s comments as he listened to the tape of a long improvisational piano duet we did together during session 21. The two excerpts of our music and his concise verbal interpretations give an essence of his experience of our work in music. Session 21 included three improvisations, the excerpts here coming from the second. Each improvisation had its own distinct character, expressing in music the many sides of Charles’s growth and personality. Session 21 was a stage in our work when the improvisations were held solely on the piano (four hands) — Charles would take the bass and pedal. He showed two distinct sides to his musical expression during this improvisation: a constant rhythmic pounding [Figure A] and a calm melodic gentleness [Figure B]. As therapist, I attempted to give color and context to Charles’s musical language. I did not try to affect or change the tempo of his music — I sat close by and gave support. Charles’s simple verbal testimony portrayed the strength of his understanding of Music #1:
